Professional indemnity insurance is a requirement for NICEIC Scheme(s) where the scope of work undertaken includes periodic inspection and testing. So, if you offer clients advice, consultancy, inspections or testing as part of your work, this cover is there to help defend claims made against you alleging errors and mistakes in your professional advice or in your work.

The cost of electrical contractor insurance cover depends on the nature of your contracting business – its size, claims history, the type of work you undertake and the level of risk that comes with it. That means there is no single average cost of electrical contractor insurance. We've worked with insurers to develop a comprehensive, flexible, and affordable electrical contractors insurance solution. This depends on the nature of your business – the kind of work you do and where, whether you employ people – and whether you have business premises or vehicles. The insurance cover you typically need includes public liability insurance cover and professional indemnity insurance cover– both of which are included as standard (amongst other cover features) in our electrical contractors liability insurance product.

If you are registered with NICEIC, you are required to have a minimum of £250,000 professional indemnity cover if the scope of work you undertake includes periodic inspection and testing. You are also required to have public liability insurance cover for a minimum of £2 million.

You may also need employers liability which is compulsory for most businesses that employ one or more people. You may then choose to add other cover features like property insurance to protect your shop, office, workshop, or other business premises; van insurance; and tools insurance – as well as covers such as personal accident and income protection.

A

The insurance covers you need as an electrical contractor depends on your business's nature – its size, whether you employ people and the kinds of work you carry out – and on your attitude to risk. Employers liability insurance is a legal requirement if you employ people – even temporarily or unpaid. Meanwhile, public liability insurance covers legal fees and compensation if a client or member of the public alleges injury or property damage as a result of your work, as well as cover for your tools, vehicles and premises. You are required to have at least £2 million public liability insurance cover as part of the NICEIC scheme(s).

Similarly, income protection insurance can step in to replace lost income if you are unable to work through illness or injury and may be a sensible precaution.

Professional indemnity insurance is a requirement for NICEIC scheme(s) where the scope of work undertaken includes periodic inspection and testing. This will cover the cost of legal fees and compensation if a client alleges a failure in your professional advice.

At NICEIC Insurance services, we have worked with insurers to develop contractors insurance solutions that are comprehensive, flexible and affordable – to make it easier for you to find the right cover at the right price.

Contractors wishing to undertake PRS electrical safety inspection work must have at least £2m in public liability insurance cover for the range of PAT Testing work undertaken, and at least £250,000 in professional indemnity insurance where the scope is of application includes periodic inspection and testing.
